This is one of the greatest compliments I receive when walking into a clown gig.There is just something about those big floppy shoes that sets the mood for the rest of your performance. After all, first impressions are everything and it pays to make a good one. So let’s not dance around the issue, we’ll get right to the sole of things and explore the options of good clown foot wear.
Do you have to buy professional clown shoes to be a real clown?
As you first venture into clowning you always can browse the resale shops for unusual shoes that may have been in fashion once but now would make an excellent pair of beginner clown shoes. Sometimes decorating a pair of canvas tennis with sparkles, glitter and wild shoelaces work for a starter pair of shoes. Converse or other high-top canvas tennis shoes are very popular with clowns for the variety of colors and patterns they come in. You can order them in extra large sizes to give the giant clown shoe look.Are clown shoes expensive?
Like everything, quality and craftsmanship come with a more expensive price tag but you do have some less expensive options. The vinyl clown shoes look pretty nice and will last for a while but you will find you need to replace them if they get too many hours in them. I have a pair for my hobo character, which are purposely torn and tattered; therefore keeping them cleaned up is not a concern. From that point, clown shoes go up the price scale well into the $400.00 range. High-end clown shoes are custom made, most often to your specific foot dimensions and are very comfortable. A well-made leather clown shoe can last for many years and even be resoled as they are made like a high-end dress shoe, the upper portion can also be re furbished. Patterns and styles are only limited by ones imagination; I have even seen clown shoes that were made into roller skates. This price range may seem a bit extreme, but as you move up the ranks as a professional clown and work more often, it truly pays to have more professionally made gear. High quality costume items will last you much longer and give people more respect for you as a performer. Setting aside money from your clown gigs is a great way to get into a sweet pair of clown shoes without breaking the personal budget.
Tip:
I find wearing a pair of aqua socks or thin slippers inside of the leatherette clown shoes makes them fit better and more comfortable.

I have been trying to find somewhere to purchase custom made clown shoes in the UK but am struggling. I tried to go for Spears however as they are retiring they are no longer accepting International orders. The specific shoes I would like to get are full length, lace-up, lollipop, bubble-toe, wing tip shoes in the colours black and white very much like those in the image at the top of this page.
If possible does anyone know where I could have them done in the Uk?
