Creative Costuming

Costume trunk.

Halloween is fast approaching and the kids are beginning to think about what they want to dress like for trick or treating and costume parties. You can buy just about any costume character you can imagine on line or at the store, but how about thinking creatively and doing a homemade costume. When you clown or are a family entertainer you are of a creative mind, so I have full confidence that you can pull something together very unique. If you are anything like me you already have a closet or box full of costumes, accessories and pieces of what not that you have collected over the years already; now is the time to put them to good use. Another option is a trip to the second hand stores to see what you can find. My kids and I have a blast searching around finding old clothes to make a costume for one event or another. Sometimes you can even find actual Halloween costumes at these stores. Some people don’t like the scary or gory route, so this is a great way to make a fun and acceptable costume for any event.  To give you a little help, my kids and I will share some ideas we had for homemade costumes.

The Chef

Chelsea is very interested in becoming a chef when she is older and we were able to find an actual chefs coat from a local high-end restaurant at the thrift store. This coat with a pair of white pants was the perfect chef get up; it was Chelsea’s idea to add the puffs of flower and wooden spoon. Clown Antics does have a giant chef’s hat for a possible add on.

The Doctor

Jared’s costume was very simple and stands the test of time. Dress shirt, tie and slacks along with a lab coat and you have the instant doctor or scientist. All of these items we had around the house, a pair of reading glasses accents the look.

Equestrian

Sarah is our equestrian so she simply chose to show off her actual riding attire, however this is not hard to duplicate for a costume. Use plain black pants instead of riding pants, a white blouse and if you can find them, tall boots and you are all set. This is her actual riding crop shown in the photo but you can purchase costume crops also.
